The Black Eyed Peas are a pop/dance band. Their music is typically hip hop. They hail from Los Angeles. The group is composed of 4 members namely will.i.am, apl.de.ap, Taboo and Fergie.
The band started out initially with 2 members.Will.i.am,who was born 1975 and is also known as William James Adams Jr and Apl.de.ap, born 1974, also known as Allan Pineda. These two started rapping and performing together around Los Angeles. The pair signed to Ruthless Records (run by Eazy-E). Along with Mookie Mook (Burning Star), & DJ Motiv8 (DJ Of B.E.P.), they called their group Atban Klann. Their debut album, Grass Roots, never got to be released though.
In 1995,their band member Eazy-E died of AIDS. The group then changed their name to the Black Eyed Peas. According to Will.i.am the name Black Eyed
Peas was chosen because "Black Eyed Peas are food for the soul".Will.i.am also said that like the Red Hot Chili Peppers he named his band after food.
Taboo (born Jaime Gomez) joined the group and in 1996, they produced and appeared on a song entitled "That's Right" for Brian Austin Green's hip-hop album One Stop Carnival. Later, they began using Kim Hill as a steady background singer. Kim worked on a solo project with Interscope Records. In 2000 Kim Hill left the band. She was replaced by Fergie (Stacy Ferguson), who joined the group in 2003. However, Fergie was just to be featured in one song, but later Will decided to offer her a position of being in the band. Through the mid-90s, the group performed in the local club circuit alongside artists such as Ozomatli and Jurassic 5.
