Birgitta Svenden is a Swedish opera singer and is also known as the Swedish Royal Court Singer. She was born March 20, 1952, Lundberg. Birgitta was raised as a child in Vuollerim which is the northernmost part of Sweden, close to the Arctic Circle.

As a child Birgitta was surrounded by music. Her father was a pianist and played the accordion in an amateur dance orchestra. Her mother was a singer in the local church choir. Birgitta also soon enrolled in a children's choir, where she played the recorder and took piano lessons.
She obtained diploma as a singing-teacher and later joined Operastudio 67 and the University College of Opera.While studying there she came to the public's notice. She had already been a nun in a production of Puccini's Suor Angelica and was one day called to the p rincipal, the great bass at the Royal Opera, Arne Tyren and offered the title role of singing for Tintomara.

Birgitta remained a member of the Royal Opera until 1994 but she became increasingly in demand by the rest of the world. During her thirteen seasons at Bayreuth she appeared in a total of 157 performances.She was soon promoted from Flosshilde to Erda in the Ring , sang Waltraute in Gi¶tterdi¤mmerung and Magdalene in Die Meistersinger von Ni¼rnberg, to mention a few roles.
Birgitta also sang at the MET during ten seasons between 1986 and 1998: the Wagner roles and also another Maddalena, the sister of the murderer Sparafucile in Rigoletto, where she had to seduce Luciano Pavarotti's Duke of Mantua.The Queen of Spades and Eugene Onegin were other operas she frequently appeared in.She studied at the Opera in Stockholm.


Why is she famous?

She became famous internationally first as a Wagner singer, especially at the Bayreuth Festival.
Birgitta Svenden has been a hovsi¥ngerska since 1995. She is also a full member of the Academy of Music and an honorary doctor at the Lulea University of Technology.Since 1 August 2005, she has been rector of the Opera in Stockholm.
