Beverly Knight is an acclaimed English soul and R&B singer. She was born on 22 March 1973 in Wolverhampton,1973, England, UK. Her original name was Beverley Ann Smith. Beverly's music is influenced by great souls such as Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin. She is signed to Parlophone Records and has released five studio albums to date.

Beverly is also an ambassador for many charities such as Christian Aid and is an active campaigner for anti-Aids organizations such as the Stop AIDS Campaign and The Terrence Higgins Trust. In addition she is a vocal campaigner against homophobic lyrics in urban music.
In September 2005 Knight joined the likes of Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell by being made a Doctor of Music after receiving the honorary degree from the University of Wolverhampton.

After rec eiving a host of awards, including three MOBO Awards, Knight was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004 at the Urban Music Awards in London. In February 2007, due to the charitable work and contribution she had made to British music, Beverley Knight was made an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II.

Why is she famous?

Beverly shot to fame with the release of her debut album "The B-Funk" in 1995. With her next album Prodigal Sista, more success followed as the album was labeled as the greatest UK soul albums of the 90s.
In 2006, she gathered more fame as she performed and starred for BBC One's music TV show, Just the Two of Us (2006-2007) and other popular music shows like "Top of The Pops" ,"This morning" , "Loose Women" and on tour the UK with reformed boy band Take That in 2006.

Beverly is recognized for her Radio 2 "Beverley's Gospel Nights", which explores the origins and impact of gospel music. To date the show has run for three seasons and has featured interviews with stars such as Destiny's Child and Shirley Caesar.
