Aurel Vlaicu was born on November 19, 1882 in Bintinti near Orastie, Hunedoara - Romania. He was a Romanian inventor, engineer and a world aviation pioneer.
Biography and Career :
Aurel Vlaicu was the eldest son in a poor and modest peasants family. His father's name was "Nenea Dumitru" and "Lelei Ana" his mother. Dumitru Vlaicu was a famous peasant in the village and Ana, his mother was a hard-working and loveable woman and wife.
Aurel Vlaicu finished High-School "Colegiul Reformat al Liceului Calvin din Orastie" and since 1919 that High-School took Aurel Vlaicu's name in his honor.
His engineer studies were made in Budapest and in Munchen, becoming a licenced engineer in 1907. After that he works as an engineer at the Opel works.
Aurel Vlaicu had a very inventive
mind and built many machines. His most important idea was to build a miraculous mechanism.
Aurel Vlaicu returned in Romania in 1909 where he built a glider. He used it for testing and a lot of flights were based on it. In the same year he moved to Bucharest and started to build his first plane – "Vlaicu I", that flied without modifications (a unique thing in the beginnings of world aviation) in 1910.
In July 1910 he had his first attempts to fly and on the 11th of august the same year Vlaicu flew on a 6 km distance and a 50 m height. On the 27th of August he would fly in front of 20.000 people on the Liberty Plain, in Blaj.
In the International Contest in Aspern, Austria he showed his brightness and won the first prize.
In 1911 Aurel Vlaicu built his second plane "Vlaicu II" and won two unforgettable awards in Aspen, Austria at the air rally in 1912.
Shortly after this success on the 13th of September 1913, in the courageous attempt to cross the Carpathian Mountains to Transylvania the wings of his plane broke. The airplane crashed and the great Aurel Vlaicu lost his life.
One year later, his friends Magnani and Silisteanu finish building "Vlaicu III".
