Arturo Toscanini (1867-1957) made La Scala, Milan (where he conducted 1898-1903, 1906-1908, and 1921-1929), the world's leading opera house.
Short Biography:
He was opposed to the Fasdst regime and in 1936 returned to the USA, where he had conducted at the Metropolitan Opera 1908-1915. The NBC Symphony Orchestra was formed for him in 1937. He retired in 1954.
