Archimedes (c. 287-212 BC) was a Greek mathematician, who made important discoveries in geometry, hydrostatics, and mechanics.
Short Biography:
He formulated a law of fluid displacement (Archimedes' principle), and is credited with the invention of the Archimedes screw, a cylindrical device for raising water.
He was born at Syracuse in Sicily. It is alleged that Archimedes' principle was discovered when he stepped into the public bath and saw the water overflow.
He used his discovery to prove that the goldsmith of the king of Syracuse had adulterated a gold crown with silver.
The Archimedes screw is still used to raise water in the Nile delta.
He designed engines of war for the defence of Syracuse, and was killed when the Romans besieged the town.
