Antonio Lobo Antunes was born on September 1, 1942 in Lisbon, Portugal. He is a contemporary Portuguese novelist.

Biography and Career :

He started his career as a student in psychiatry. This way, he followed the tradition in his family. He took part in the Colonial War in Angola, between 1970-1973. He was lieutenant during the war, but he worked as a psychiatrist and surgeon. This experience was dramatic for his life. Nowadays, Antonio Lobo Antunes is known as one of the most talented Portuguese novelists.

His first novel appeared after the revolution in 1974 and is called "Memoria de Elefante" (1979). He wrote about one novel a year. The psychological trauma he suffered during the war was a constant setting for his novels. They are very appreciated worldwide being the su bject of many thesis and viva-voices.
