Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) was an Italian Marxist, who attempted to unify social theory and political practice.
He helped to found the Italian Communist party in 1921, and was elected to parliament in 1924, but was imprisoned by Mussolini from 1926; his Quademi di carcere! Prison Notebooks (1947) were published after his death.
His humane and gradualist approach to Marxism, particularly his emphasis on the need to overthrow bourgeois ideology, influenced European Marxists in their attempt to distance themselves from orthodox determinist Soviet communism.
