Antoine Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794) was a French chemist.
Short Biography:
He proved that combustion needed only a part of "air" which he called oxygen, thereby destroying the theory of phlogiston (an imaginary 'fire element' released during combustion).
With Laplace, he showed that water was a compound of oxygen and hydrogen. In this way he established the modern basic rules of chemical combination.
