Biography and Career:
Anthony Perkins from New York is the son of Janet Esselstyn and James Ripley Osgood Perkins, stage and film actor. He studied at The Brooks School, The Browne & Nichols School, Columbia University and Rollins College. He then shifted to Boston in 1942 after his father's death.
His debut movie was The Actress in 1953 for which he won the Golden Globe Award for New Star of the Year - Actor. . His second movie was Friendly Persuasion in 1956 for which he was nominated for the Academy Awards. He also depicted the troubled former Boston Red Sox baseball player Jimmy Piersall in the true story Fear Strike Out in 1957.
He then released three po
p albums in 1957 an 1958 on Epic and RCA as Tony Perkins. In 1957 his solo song Moon Light Swim was at the 24th position in the Billboard Hot 100. In 1958 he acted in the movie The Matchmaker with Shirley Booth and Shirley MacLaine.
He was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance in Look Homeward, Angel in 1958. He then acted in Green Mansions with Audrey Hepburn in 1959 and Tall Story a college comedy in 1960 with Jane Fonda. In 1968 he acted as a disturbed young murderer in the movie Pretty Poison. He also played the role of Chaplain Tappman in Catch 22 in 1970. Along with composer cum lyricist Stephen Sondheim he wrote the screenplay for the movie The Last of Sheila in 1973. He also received the Edgar Award from the Mystery Writer of America for Best Motion Picture Screenplay in 1974. He has also acted in the movie The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean with Paul Newman, Jacqueline Bisset and Victoria Principal.
