She was first seen in the play Annie when she was around 6 years old. Her next theatre appearance was in Gypsy, produced by Maine State Music Theatre. In 1999, Anna acted in the Broadway play High Society. Her role in this play nominated her for the first time for the Tony Award.

In 1999, she had appeared in the show My Favorite Broadway: The Leading Ladies. The she briefly acted in an unsuccessful show named The Mayor.
In 2003, she got a major role in the movie Camp as Fritzi Wagner. For this role, she earned a couple of nominations from the Independent Spirit Awards and the Chlotrudis Awards. In 2007, her next movie, Rocket Science, was released and gave her a second nomination for the Independent Spirit Awards.

In 2008, her movies include Marc Pease Experience with Ben Stiller, Elsewhere and Twilight. The third movie gave her the biggest popularity till date.
