She attended the Boca Ciega High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, the Yale University and obtained a degree in African-American studies in 1980 and the Yale drama school where received a Master of Fine Arts Degree. Soon she became an actress and for the role as Tina Turner in "What's Love Got to Do with It" was ranked on the 95th position on Premiere Magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Film Performances of all time.
In 2002 she was awarded with the Lena Horne Award for Outstanding Career Achievements in the Field of Entertainment. She became the first African-American to win the Best Actress Golden Globe for a Mu
sical or Comedy. On October 12, 1997 she married Courtney B. Vance and the couple has two children. They are twins and their names are Bronwyn Golden and Slater Josiah. She is well known for her roles in the biographical film that portraits woman in American culture.
