Ang Lee was born on October 23, 1954, in Chaochou, Pingtung, Republic of China. In his early life, he could not get through university entrance exams and, so, pursued a degree at an arts school. After completing his study there, he moved to the USA.

He graduated from the University of Illinois in 1980 and enrolled in the Tisch School of the Arts. He could not get a work during this time and had to stay home for six years writing screenplays without getting any major acknowledgement.

Ang Lee sent two scripts he had written to a competition organized in his home country. The two scripts, "Pushing Hands" and "The Wedding Banquet" earned the first and second places respectively. This gave him the opportunity to direct the movie from the first script. "Pushing Hands" enjoyed high critical appraisal. In 1993, Ang Lee directed "The Wedding Banquet" and it was nominated for an Oscar.

The next movie he directed was "Eat Drink Man Woman" of 1994 which earned another set of awards and success - both commercially and critically.
He next directed the movie "Sense and Sensibility", adapted from Jane Austen's novel. The movie was a huge success and ended with 56 awards in total. After that he did two other movies and, then, he directed "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon". The movie was nominated for 10 Oscars and earned more than any movie in foreign language film in the USA.

However, the curve went downhill after that. His next two directions, including the "Ride With the Devil" suffered millions in losses. But, Ang Lee made up for that with the movie "Brokeback Mountain" of 2005. This earned him his first Oscar in category of Best Director.

Ang Lee is famous as the Taiwanese-American director of the movies "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" and "Brokeback Mountain". He is also an Oscar winner.
