Biography and Career:
Andrew Johnson opened his eyes in poverty and his parents handed over him to a Taylor but he ran away. He began a Tailor shop in and took keen interest in the debates and also participated in debates at local academy. He got married to Eliza McCardle.
Andrew Johnson was a very nice speaker and won the hearts of common people by his attractive and admiring language. As he grew up in poverty so he was acquainted with the pain of poverty so when he was a member of Representative house and senate in 1840 to 1850, he tried his level best to relieve the grieves of poor people by presenting a homestead bill.
Johnson was co
nsistent of his senate seat during the secession crisis, that's why he was loved and admired in the north and became a traitor in the south. His contributions in the field of reconstruction as a Military Governor of in 1862 were appreciable. In 1864 National Union Party nominated him for the election of Vice Presidency.
Johnson succeeded to the presidency when Lincoln was assassinated in 1865. He was the 17th President of the U.S. during the civil war. When he presented the civil rights bills, he faced a huge resistance in the form bitter disputes with Republicans.
In December 1865 most of southern states were reconstructed and slavery was eliminated. In 1866 civil rights bill was passed and Negroes were considered as U.S citizens. That is why discrimination against them came to an end.
He was tried by the senate in 1868 spring and by one vote he was acquitted in 1875 he returned to the senate and died a few months later.
