Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov (1921-1989) was a Soviet physicist, known both as the "father of the Soviet H-bomb" and as an outspoken human-rights campaigner.
Short Biography:
Nobel Peace Prize in 1975. He was elected to the Congress of the USSR People's Deputies (CUPD) in 1989, where he emerged as leader of its radical reform grouping.
He protested against Soviet nuclear tests and was a founder of the Soviet Human Rights Committee. In 1980, he was arrested and sent to internal exile in Gorky, following his criticism of Soviet action in Afghanistan.
At the end of 1986, he was freed from exile and allowed to return to Moscow and resume his place in the Soviet Academy of Sciences.
