Amitabh Bachchan (full name Amitabh Harivansh Bachchan) was born on October 11, 1942, in Allahabad, India. Before entering the mainstream Bollywood he worked as a freight broker at a shipping firm in Kolkata.
He was first seen on the Bollywood screens in the movie "Saat Hindustani" (1969) for which he earned the National Award for Best Newcomer. He kept working hard in the following years, which resulted in classic movies like "Anand" (1971), "Guddi" (1971), "Bawarchi" (1972) and "Bombay to Goa" (1972). In 1973, his first big hit, "Zanjeer" was released. That year also marked the release of two other hit movies "Abhimaan" and "Namak Haraam".
He married actress and co-star Jaya Bhaduri on June 3, 1973.
After hard work through the next two decades in movies like "Deewar", "Sholay" and
"Shakti", he had cemented his ground in Bollywood as one of the most influential actors of all time. Till the middle of the 1980s, he acted in four to eight movies a year.
His friend and then Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi, requested him to enter the world of politics in 1984. He accepted and, in the next round of elections, he became the Member of Parliament from Allahabad. However, he quit politics 3 years later when financial allegations were brought against him.
After a retirement and dull phase for most of the 90s, Amitabh Bachchan made a solid comeback in the show "Kaun Banega Crorepati" in 2000, the Indian adaptation of "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire". The show was propelled to huge success and ran successfully till 2005. That year, he also acted in the hit movie "Mohabbatein" which earned him another Filmfare award.
In 2007, actress Aishwarya Rai married his son actor Abhishek Bachchan.
Bachchan's projectsin 2009 include "Johnny Mastana", "Teen Patti", "Exclusion", "Talismaan", "Zamaanat" and "Shantaram".
