Amanda Donohoe was born and brought up in London, England, UK. She is the daughter of Ted Donohoe, antique dealers. Her father is from the Irish / Russian descent and mother is from Swiss. When she was 16 years old she left her home. She was accepted at the Central School of Speech and Drama when she was in her twenties. She decided to shift to Los Angeles in 1980.
She was recognized worldwide by people when she acted with Oliver Reed as Lucy Irvine in Nicolas Roeg's Castaway in 1986. This success brought her two roles in Ken Russell films The Lair of the White Worm, based on a Bram Stoker novel, and The Rainbow, based on a D. H. Lawrence novel. She also appea
red in the music videos for the songs "Prince Charming", "Antmusic" and "Stand & Deliver" by Adam and the Ants in 1981.
She took part in the first lesbian kiss on American television in 1991 when her character CJ Lamb on L.A. Law kissed Abbie Perkins the role played by Michele Greene. She appeared for two seasons in L.A. Law. She has worked in the movie Liar, Lair with Jim Carrey and television series like Murder City, Bad Girls and a guest appearance in Ally McBeal. Her stage roles are as Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate in London's West End and the title role of Hedda Gabler at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester in 2005.
