
Alison Moyet (full name Genevieve Alison Jane Moyet was born on June 18, 1961, in Billericay, Essex, England.
Biography and Career:
Her interest in music was mainly influenced by her parents, who liked listening to the likes of Jacques Brei and classical music.
When she left school at the age of 16, she didn’t have a clear career ambition. She had sung, since her last year in school, in bands like The Vandals and The Little Roosters. But that was purely a hobby. During this time, she kept changing her jobs from shop worker to piano tuner.
After a few of her gigs across town, Alison got known in the musical community of her area. While doing a piano tuning course, she got the offer of recording a demo for Vince Clark of Depeche Mode. The soon released the song “Only You” t
o a huge success. Since then, Alison and Vince started working together as Yazoo, or Yaz in the US. They officially launched in 1981 and earned lot of quick fame.
They released two albums under the titles of Upstairs at Eric’s and You and Me Both. They fused synth and soul to create a fresh dance sound. The band was even awarded as the Best New Band at the Brit Award.
After two successful albums with Yazoo, Alison set out to pursue a solo career and released her debut solo album Alf (1984) under the label of CBS. Three tracks from this album remained in the top 10 hits for over three years. Among them, them track “Invisible” took Alison’s music to the United States. This was followed by UK tours and Moyet received two Brit Awards. She also performed in Live Aid Benefit (1985).
Her next two albums were Raindancing (1987) and Hoodoo (1981). The music of Hoodoo was a mix of rock and soul. The single “It Won’t Be Long” was nominated for Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance.
Her next album was Essex (1984), but she could not release any fresh work for the next seven years following a legal conflict with the Sony label. She still began performing with Dusty Springfield in 1995.
During the recording delay, the singer took to acting and starred as Mama Morton for six months in Chicago. She won a release contract with Sony and released her new album Homeland in 2002. It was one of the top sellers of 2002.
In 2007, she started recording for her new album The Turn, written by herself and Pete Glenister.
