Biography and Career:

Alexander Ovechkin (full name Alexander Mikhaylovich Ovechkin) was born on September 17, 1985. His father played soccer at a professional level. His first professional exposure to the world of hockey came with his appearance in Dynamo Moscow for the Russian Superleague.

During the next two seasons, he scored 39 points for his club.

His performance in the Russian Superleague caught the attention of the NHL officials and he was soon brought in as Washington Capitals’ first overall for the entry draft of 2004’s NHL. But The NHL was locked out that year and Alexander returned to his country to play for Dynamo Moscow. There he scored 26 points playing in a total of 37 games.

In October, 2005, Alexander Ovechkin made his NHL debut. He scored two goals in his first match against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He became the third highest scorer that NHL season with 106 points in his name. He was selected as the top rookie of NHL. He was also selected for his first All-Star team. In 2006, he participated in the Torino Winter Olympics.

In 2007, he scored 92 points in the NHL, thus, becoming the 4th highest scoring player of the year. That year, he got a place in the NHL All-Star Game.
In the 2008 season, he scored 112 points and helped his team to reach the finals after 4 years. He won a number of trophies that year which include the Hart Trophy, the Maurice Richard Trophy, the Lester B. Pearson Award and the Art Ross Trophy.

Why is he famous?

Alexander Ovechkin is famous as a hockey player for the Washing Capitals. He hailed as a folk hero in hockey.
