Alexander McQueen was born on March 17, 1969, in London, England. He had aspirations to become a designer from an early age and he even designed garments for his three sisters. He dropped from school at the age of 16 to pursue a career in fashion designing.
His first entry in the fashion world was with Anderson & Sheppard where he made dresses for people like Mikhail Gorbachev and Prince Charles. After that, he worked with Romeo Gigli and Koji Tasuno. He returned to London when he was 25 and applied for the post of a teacher at the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design. Instead, he was asked to join as a student. McQueen followed the advice and he graduated from the institution and his portfolio was bought by fashion biggie Isabella Blow.
In 1996, he began his own fashion
label and was selected as Britain's Designer of the Year for designs like bumsters. This led to a contract with Givenchy as the chief designer. But he could not keep the job for long as he felt the company interfered in his creativity.
In 2000, he joined Gucci as a fashion director. Despite the controversies, he grabbed the Designer of the Year award thrice till 2003 and also earned a CBE award and an International Fashion Designer of the Year award.
While staying with Gucci, Alexander McQueen launched two ranges of perfumes, My Queen and Kingdom. He also worked with Puma for an exclusive range of shoes.
