Alexander II of Russia
Alexander II (1818-1881) was Tsar of Russia from 1855 until 1881.
He embarked on reforms of the army, the government, and education, and is remembered as "The Liberator" for his emancipation of the serfs 1861.
However, the revolutionary element remained unsatisfied, and Alexander became increasingly autocratic and reactionary. He was assassinated by Nihilists.
Why is Alexander II famous?
Alexander II was the Emperor of the Russian Empire from March 3, 1855 until his assassination on March 13, 1881.
