Q:   Ask a Question about Alexander Graham Bell
Alexander Graham Bell A famous scientist and an inventor, Alexander Graham Bell is known to all for his invention of the Telephone. Much less is known about the fact that apart from inventing the telephone, he has made a valuable contribution in the field of science, especially, aeronautics.

Biography:

From childhood Graham bell was good in elocution and this he had inherited from his father and grandfather, as both of them were elocutionists. He got most of the encouragement from his family itself. At the age of 12, he made a dehusking machine with peddles and nailbrushes. This was his first invention ever. And after that there was no stopping back.

Alexander dropped out of school and began his experiments with voice and sounds. And his father encouraged him to carry on with his experiments wit h speech and he found out that if vowels can be produced electronically than so can consonants and articulate speech. The family moved to London where Graham Bell carried out his experiments and helped his father too with his speech demonstrations and joined Hull’s school for the Deaf.

After a few years in London, the family moved to Ontario, Canada. There they stayed for some years at his father’s friend’s home and then bought a property of their own and Graham Bell started a small workshop for his experiments near to his new home. Alexander received the title of, Honorary Chief for translating the unwritten Mohawk language into visible speech symbols. After this success he moved to Boston for a demonstration to Horace Mann School of Deaf and later was called to American Asylum for Deaf-mutes in Hartford and the Clerk school for deaf in Northampton. Finally, he opened a school for the deaf in Boston and named it, "Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of Speech".

Bell wanted to use the electric multireed for transmitting human voice over it and he sought help of Joseph Henry, a famous scientist then and he began working with it. On June2, 1875, Bell’s assistant accidently plucked a reed whose voice was heard on the other end and this is how Bell came up with telephone and by 1877, in USA 150,000 people started using it.

On Jan 15 1915, Bell made his first transcontinental call from NY to SF. He won Volta Prize for inventing the telephone and in 1914 won AIEEE’s Edison medal for invention of telephone.
