Biography and Career:
Alex Kapranos was born in Almondsbury, Gloucestershine, England. He is the son of an English mother and Greek father. When he was three months old he shifted to the North East of England. He spent his childhood in Sunderland and South Shields. He and his family shifted to Edinburgh in 1980. They then shifted to Glasgow in 1984 where he went to Bearsden Academy. He went to the University of Aberdeen to study theology when he was 17 years old. After he dropped out from the University of Aberdeen he joined the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow where he learnt Catering and Hotel Management. He has worked as a chef, barman, music promoter, driver,
welder and lecturer.
He has played in a few famous Glasgow bands including The Blisters, long-standing ska stalwarts The Amphetameanies and The Yummy Fur while he as working as a chef, bartender and lecturer in IT at the city's Anniesland College.
He formed the band Franz Ferdinand in 2001. The members of the band apart from Alex Kapranos are Nick McCarthy and Paul Thomason. The band's second single "Take me out" that was released on 12th January 2004 was in the 3rd position in the UK charts. The band won the Mercury Music Prize in 2004 and they also won the BRIT award for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act in 2005. He worte a weekly food column for G2 in the Guardian newspaper in September 2005. This column was about his culinary adventures.
