Albert Lutuli (1899-1967) was a South African politician, president of the African National Congress from 1952.
Short Biography:
Luthuli, a Zulu tribal chief, preached nonviolence and muitiracialism. Arrested in 1956, he was never actually tried for treason, although he suffered certain restrictions from 1959.
He was under suspended sentence for burning his pass (an identity document required of non-white South Africans) when awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960.
