Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931) was a German born American physicist.
Short Biography:
In conjunction with Edward Morley, he performed in 1887 the Michelson-Morley experiment to detect the motion of the Earth through the postulated ether (a medium believed to be necessary for the propagation of light).
The failure of the experiment indicated the nonexistence of the ether, and led Einstein to his theory of relativity. He won the Nobel prize in 1907.
He invented the Michelson interferometer, and made precise measurement of the speed of light.
