He is married to the famous actress/producer and painter Paula Oinonen. He is the brother of famous writer/director Mika Kaurismaki. His father was a salesman. At the University of Helsinki, he studied media studies and at the University of Tampere, he studied journalism. Before he entered film industry, he used to work as a postman.
