Hojatoleslam Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani (born in 1934) was a Iranian cleric and politician.
After training as a mullah (Islamic teacher) under Ayatollah Khomeini at the holy city of Qom, he acquired considerable wealth through his construction business but kept in touch with his exiled mentor.
When the Ayatollah returned after the revolution of 1979-1980 Rafsanjani became the eminent speaker of the Iranian parliament and, after Khomeini's death in 1989, state president and effective political leader.
