Mr. Adrian Cronauer has worked in several places and played several different roles. He was born on 8th of September in the year of 1938 in the city of Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He grew up and started radio jockeying at the age of 12. Later on he grew up and got enrolled as a student in University of Pittsburg. There too he continued doing show on local college radio stations and was a founding member in University's college radio WPTS. Later on in his life he joined Department of Defense.
He was studying law at Pittsburg and later he also did a masters degree in Media studies from New School for Social Research in New York City. Prior to his career in law he had served as a TV news anchorman and a radio presenter for seven years in New York City. He had also founded his own advertising
agency. After that he used to teach broadcasting at University level and also wrote a book on TV and radio announcing which was used as a reference by many schools and universities.
His main job which brought him lots of fame was as a radio jockey in AFRS Armed Forces Radio Service during 1964-65 when he was in Vietnam. He even scripted a story of a movie named, 'Good morning, Vietnam' in which Robin Williams portrayed the character of Adrian Cronauer. Williams was nominated for that year's Academy Award and also won a Golden Globe award for the same.
He was tumultuous and a bit manic too as a radio jockey. Later, when he came back home he used to do a show named 'Dawn Buster'. After that he did a show on National Public Radio about American Forces Vietnam Network and its work as military radio and TV. Due to this work of his he was awarded 2 gold medals in New York Radio Festival in the year 1991 and the next year he was awarded the Ohio State Award for the same. He is a member of Mensa which is the largest and the oldest High-IQ society in the world. He has been a member and a volunteer in several societies and organizations like he was a member of the Virginia Public Broadcasting Board, on the Arlington County (Virginia) Cable TV Advisory Committee; he was also the Board of Governors of the New School for Social Research in New York City.
He served for two terms as a trustee of the Virginia War Memorial and is a former member of the national board of the Armed Forces Broadcasters Association and the board of the National Vietnam & Gulf War Veterans Coalition. There are several more like being a director of Citizens Flag Alliance, life member of American Legions, etc.
He is a Republican and has always been one. He resides in Arlington VA with his wife Jeane Steppe and his two children and five grand children. He presently serves as Special Assistant to Director, Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office.
