702 (pronounced "Seven-Oh-Two"), is an American R&B girl band which was formed in 1994 in Las Vegas.
Biography and Career :
The group had four members, three sisters: Irish Grinstead, born on June 2, 1980, LeMisha 'Misha' Grinstead, born on June 10, 1978, Orish Grinstead, born on June 2, 1980 and a lead singer Kameelah 'Meelah' Williams, born on March 8, 1978. In 2001 Meelah left the band in order to start her own solo career, but after two years she came back. All the girls were friends at a school in Las Vegas and they used to sing in the lobby of Caesar's Palace until one night when Sinbad heard them and figured out they were really talented. He took hem to a competition in Atlanta and they were placed on the second position of the podium. There they convinced Michael Bivin
s to listen them while singing and he admitted they were good. Soon they started producing their first album, called "No Doubt" and received the name "702" because this is the area code of Las Vegas. After this album another two albums came, "702" and "Star".
In 2000 the girls were nominated at the American Music Awards for the category Favorite Soul/R&B New Artist for: "702". The next year at the BET Awards they were nominated for Best Female Group for the album "702". Between 1997 and 2003 they were nominated for Best R&B/Soul Single - Group, Band or Duo or Best R&B/Soul Album of the Year - Group, Band or Duo with their three albums and in 1997 they even won the award.
In 2007 Meelah left the band for the second time and she will release a single. The band is proposing to come up with their fourth album in the summer of 2007.
