William Makepeace Thackeray (1811-1863) was a regular contributor to Fraser's Magazine and Punch.
Short Biography:
Vanity Fair 1847-1848 was his first novel, followed by Pendennis in 1848, Henry Esmond in 1852 (and its sequel The Virginians 1857-1859), and The Newcomes 1853-1855, in which Thackeray's tendency to sentimentality is most marked.
Son of an East India Company official, he was educated at Charterhouse and Trinity College, Cambridge. He studied law in the Middle Temple, and then art in Paris, before ultimately settling to journalism in London. Other works include The Book of Snobs in 1848 and the fairy tale The Rose and the Ring in 1855.
