Traian Vuia was born on August 17, 1872 in Surducu Mic (named Traian Vuia today). He was a Romanian aviation pioneer and inventor.

Biography and Career :

As a child he had a passion for applied mechanic and for flying dragons developed after he assisted at an air craft demonstration when he was 10 years old. After that he carefully observes their details and tries to manufacture them himself.

In high-school he learns Mechanics and Physics and tries to explain himself what goes on around the machine, the forces that operates at his launching and to maintain it in the air.

In 1892 he goes to Budapest to study. After 1 year because he didn’t have enough money, he returns in Romania and he signs in into law school, becoming in 1901 a lawyer. After his graduation, he returns to Lugoj where he starts to study human flying and to build the first flying machine which he calls it “automobile-airplane”.

Because of the lack of money he doesn’t succeed in finishing the project and decides to go to Paris in 1902. Here he tries to find a sponsor for his project but all his requests were rejected, even by the Sciences Academy in Paris in 1903, motivating their decline with the fact that ”flying with a machine that is heavier than air is only a dream and an utopia”.

In 1905, after hard work, he finishes his machine, inventing and building also a patented engine. It weighted 250 kg, had a holding surface of 14 m2 and a 20 HP engine.

In 1906 his machine – “Vuia I” flied for the first time near Paris. After a 50 meters acceleration, it raised 1 meter above the ground, flying 12 m.

In 1925 he invented also a steam generator and between 1918 and 1922 2 helicopters.

He passed away in 1950.

Trivia :

- Timisoara International Airport (TSR), is the Romania's second largest airport, and it carries out his name.
- Traian Vuia received the French patent number 332.106 for his airplane-automobile on August 17, 1903.
