Sir Stephen Harold Spender (1909-2005) earlier poetry has a left-wing political content, as in Twenty Poems in 1930, Vienna in 1934, The Still Centre in 1939, and Poems of Dedication in 1946.

Other works include the verse drama Trial of a Judge in 1938, the autobiography World within World in 1951, and translations. Ybs Journals 1939-1943 were published in 1985.
Educated at University College, Oxford, he founded with Cyril Connolly the magazine Horizon (of which he was co-editor 1939-1941) and 1953-1967 was co-editor of Encounter. He became professor of English at University College, London in 1970.
