He made his first film A Lizzard Too Much for the anniversary of his students' corps in 1960. He got married to Martine Tours In 1967, and he was two daughters: Claudia (born 1972) and Helen (born 1974).
He did his schooling at Gymnasium Haganum in The Hague. In 1955 he enrolled at the University of Leiden, where he joined the students' corps.
