Biography and Career:
Taking birth in a rich Industrialist family in Thumeries, Nord, France, Louis Malle was supposed to lead a comfortable life and for this he choose a traditional way of education like political science at the Sorbonne but he ended up in studying film studies at IDHEC which changed his life totally.
In 1956 just at the age of 24, he tried his hands as a cameraman and co-director to Jacques Cousteau in Oscar winning documentary The Silent World . He assisted
Robert Bresson on A Man Escaped, the French title for which is "Un condamne i mort s'est echappe ou Le vent souffle oi¹ il veut". As a director his first feature film was Ascenseur pour l'echafaud which was released in U.K. as "Lift to the Scaffold" and in the U.S. originally as Frantic and then as Elevator to the Gallows in the year 1957.
Malle's next film "The Lovers", starring Moreau, was noted for the controversy it had created that time due to the sexual contents it had. It was a landmark in the history of U.S. Supreme Court case determining the legal definition of obscenity. Eventually the higher court had found that the film was not obscene and hence needed to be constitutionally protected.
Malle's films mainly tackled taboo subjects. The film "The Fire Within"( French subtitle "Le Feu follet" deals with a person who is about to commit suicide. The 1971 film "Murmur of the Heart" centers round the incestuous relationship between mother and son. The 1974 film Lacombe Lucien is about collaboration with the Nazis in Vichy France in World War II. The film "Murmur of the Heart" earned Malle his first of three nominations for Academy Awards for "Best Writing Original Screenplay". Malle made a documentary film about India in the year 1968 which was released as a film "Calcutta" which later was broadcasted in BBC as a seven part TV series called L'Inde Phantome or "Phantom India"
Malle was married to Anne-Marie Deschodt from 1965 to 1967. He had a son with born in 1971with German actress Gila von Weitershausen. He had a daughter named Justine (born in 1974) with Canadian-born French actress Alexandra Stewart.
