His work is often dramatically lit, by fire, candlelight, or even volcanic explosion.
Several of his subjects are highly original, for example The Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump in 1768 (National Gallery, London). His portraits include the reclining figure of Sir Brooke Boothby in 1781 (Tate Gallery, London).
