J.Holiday was born in Washington D.C. and he went to three local high schools. In one school he recognized his talent in singing during a showcase night. By then, he was a regular listener of Boyz II Men, Tupac Shakur, Marvin Gaye and Jodeci records. Him influence in music is mainly because of Marvin Gaye and has been compared to him in many reviews.
