Hedrick Smith was born on July 9, 1933 in Kilmacolm, Scotland. He is a former reporter and editor for The New York Times, and won the Emmy Award for producer/correspondent for the PBS show Frontline, and author of several books.
He reported for the New York Times from 1962 to 1988. The Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 1974 was won by him for stories from Russia and Eastern Europe .
