Gheorghe Izbaşeşscu - poet. Also journalist. Born on September 8th 1935 in the village Laicai (Argeş), he is the son of Gheorghe Izbaşescu, communal clerk, and of Victoria (née Militescu). After graduating in 1953 from “Ienachita Vacarescu” secondary school in Tirgovişte, he attended for three years the courses of the Faculty of Slavistics at the University of Bucharest.
He resumed his studies in 1967 and he graduated in 1970 from the “Al. I. Cuza” University in Iaşi (Romanian Language and Literature section). He started his literary activity in highschool, at “Alexandru Sahia” literary circle in Tirgovişte, then he attended the circle of the Faculty of Philology at the University of Bucharest, “Junimea noua” circle of “G. Calinescu” Cultural Society
in Oneşti, the circle of the “Ateneu” literarv review in Bacau and the circle “Zburatorul - B” of “Zburatorul” Cultural League founded by the author in Oneşti in 1990.
He made an early debut in print in “Tinarul scriitor” literary review of Bucharest with a poem. But the true debut of the author is a selection of poems in “Ateneu” literary review (no. 6/1979). His first book was the poetry volume Life in Paintings/ Viata in tablouri (Albatros, 1984). He contributed poetry and opinion articles to the following literary reviews: “Amfiteatru”, “Ateneu”, “Argeş”, “Astra”, “Apostrof, “Arca”, “Art Panorama”, “Calende”, “Convorbiri literare”, “Cronica”, “Contemporanul”, “Dacia literara”, “Euphorion”, “Familia”, “Luceafarul”, “Orizont”, “Poesis”, “Paralela 45”, “Ramuri”, “România literara”, “Steaua”, “Tribuna”, “Transilvania”, “Tomis”, “Unu”, “Vatra”, “Viata Româneasca”, “Zburatorul”, and others.
After his first book, he published the volumes of poetry: The One-Piece Flat no 49 / Garsoniera 49 (Junimea, 1985); Descending from the Paintings / Coborirea din tablouri (Plumb, 1993); The Group of Manouvres / Ansamblul de manevre (Plumb, 1993); Ulysses of the Town / Ulise al oraşului (Plumb, 1994; Marineasa, 1998); Melodrama of the Real / Melodrama realului (Timpul, 1995; Marineasa, 1997); The Hand With a Belated Effect / Mina cu efect intirziat (Helicon, 1997); The Muse from Trashcan / Muza din tomberon (Marineasa, 1998); Songs of Salvation / Cintece de mintuire (Axa, 1998).
His poems were selected in Contemporary Romanian Poetry / Poezia româna actuala edited by Marin Mincu (Pontica, 1998). Abroad, he was included in the anthology Streiflicht. Eine Auswahl zeitgenossicher Rumänischer Lyrik (Dionysos Verlag, Germany, 1994). He received the following awards: the award of “Vatra” literary review at the “Romulus Guga” contest (1989); the award of “Convorbiri literare” literary review (1998). He travelled to Ukrain, and the Republic of Moldova. At present, the author is a chief-editor at “Zburatorul” literary rewiew in Oneşti, editor at “Poezia” literary rewiew in Iaşi and “Antares” magazine in Galati, and a professor at the literary creation department of the Pupils’ Club in Oneşti.
He is a member of the Writers’ Union in Romania and a founding member of the Association of Professional Writers in Romania - ASPRO, in whose Council he was elected in 1996.
