George Pruteanu was born on December 15, 1947 in Bucharest, Romania. He is a Romanian university professor, politician and a literary critic.
Biography and Career :
His father, Paul Pruteanu was a doctor and a university professor also, researching the Moldova's history of medicine.
George Pruteanu studied Literature at the Iasi and Bucharest universities, and after graduating he got a master's degree in Philosophy. Starting with 1972 he has written many articles for different literary magazines, such as "Literary discussions", "The Chronicle" and "The Contemporary".
After The Revolution in 1989, he continued working as a journalist for "Express" and "Evenimentul Zilei"("English title - The Day's Eevent") newspapers. Between 1995 and 1999 he was the host of a 5 minutes d
aily television program about using correctly the Romanian language (in 1995- at Tele 7 ABC, 1995-1996- at PRO TV, and 1997-1999 and in 2006 at TVR 1).
In 1996 he was elected senator of Constanta as a member of The National Peasant Christian Democratic Party, but he resigned in 1998.
In 2000 he was reelected, this time in Bistrita-Nasaud as a member of The Social Democrat Party.
In 2003 he left the party, joining The Big Romania Party and he candidated for the Senate on behalf of Suceava.
Pruteanu introduced, in 1997, a law project known as "Pruteanu Law" in which he demands that all public texts (commercials included) that are in a foreign language should contain also their Romanian translation. The law was adopted by The Parliament and promulgated by the president Ion Iliescu in 2004 in a modified variant that doesn't contain the penalties mentioned in the original project.
He is also a critic of the entertainment industry in Romania, especially a critic of the low quality programs and of "manele" which he calls "garbage".
