George Brinton McClellan (1826-1885) was an American Civil War general, commander in chief of the Union forces (1861-1862).

He was dismissed by President Lincoln when he delayed five weeks in following up his victory over the Confederate general Lee at the battle of Antietam.
He was the unsuccessful Democrat presidential candidate against Lincoln in 1864.
