Konstantin Sergeivich Stanislavsky (1863-1938) founded the Moscow Art Theatre in 1898 and directed productions of Chekhov and Gorky.
He was the originator of Method acting, described in My Life in Art in 1924 and other works, in which actors seek to identify psychologically with their characters.
The Method had considerable influence on acting techniques in Europe and the USA (resulting in the founding of the Actors Studio).
