Benjamin Thompson Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford (1753-1814) published in 1978 his theory that heat is a mode of motion, not a substance.

Short Biography:

Rumford spied for the British in the War of American Independence, and was forced to flee from America to England in 1776. He travelled in Europe, and was created a count of the Holy Roman Empire for services to the elector of Bavaria in 1791. He founded the Royal Institution in London in 1799.
