At first she played in soap operas and her first role was in "Brookside", a soap opera on the British Channel 4 where she played Beth Jordache. For this role she received the National Television Award for Most popular actress. After this she was seen in "The Tribe", "Closer", "Lulu", "Rogue Trader", "The Land Girls", "A Midsummer Night's Dream", "Timeline" and "Me Without You". Along Michelle Williams se appeared in "Goal!", "Goal! 2" and "Goal! 3".
She won Drama Desk and Theatre World awards and in 2006 was awarded Honorary Doctorate by the University of Bolton for contributions to the performing arts. She and David Thewlis have a long term relationship, th
ey are living together and in 2005 they had a girl, Gracie. As a model she appeared in commercials for Pantene Pro-V Ice shine, 3 Mobile and Virgin Atlantic.
